Catholic Charities History
Catholic Charities was founded in 1917 based on the belief that people have a right and a duty to participate in society and to seek the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. For 83 years, Catholic Charities has been proud to welcome people of all faiths, races, and lifestyles. Through the 1950’s, Catholic Charities primarily operated in the urban areas of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy where
volunteers and religious women worked with orphaned children, foster and adoptive families, and hospitals.
Today, Catholic Charities, with 1,500 staff members of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, operates in the 14 counties of the Roman Catholic Diocese, comprising Albany, Columbia, Delaware, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington counties. Catholic Charities runs homes for victims of domestic violence, mentoring programs for troubled teens, daycare programs for working families, food pantries and shelters for the homeless, emergency services for families who have come upon hard times, and many other services. With a constant eye on how the most vulnerable members of our society are faring, Catholic Charities is committed to developing diverse responses to local community needs.
