Catholic Charities’ Maureen Petrie Receives 2015 Commissioner’s Service Award
Awarded by the NY State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Service
for her work in the Herkimer Prevention Council
HERKIMER, NY – October 14, 2015: Maureen Petrie, Catholic Charities’ Director of the Herkimer Prevention Council, was honored today with the 2015 Commissioner’s award from NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). This award is given annually to a person in the state who demonstrates leadership, excellence, and commitment to the mission of treatment, prevention, and recovery. State Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez, M.S., L.M.S.W., presented the award to Ms. Petrie.
“Maureen has been working in the prevention field for more than 20 years,” said Deanna Charles, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Herkimer County. “Her leadership has been instrumental in connecting community groups through the Prevention Council. She is always looking to improve or enhance the services to the Herkimer area - we are so proud of Maureen and all that she’s done to help in our towns.”
Ms. Petrie’s work with the Prevention Council gathers community members in a coalition to prevent and combat substance abuse. In rural areas like Herkimer County, her ability to leverage the talents of a wide group of people and build consensus has been critical to the success of the Prevention Council.
The Herkimer Prevention Council provides comprehensive substance abuse prevention education services as defined by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services targeting individuals, families, schools and communities in Herkimer County. The service approaches used by the HCPC include; classroom education (K-12), student assistance counseling, information dissemination and referral & community education and training.
