Barbara, found herself at a crossroads after a fall left her with a broken wrist and a knee in need of care. "I couldn't stay at my son's house anymore," she recalls, "because of my fall it just wasn’t a safe place for me."

It was in this vulnerable moment that Barbara's path intersected with Kim's. "He came here first," she explains, her smile radiant. "And then, he just said 'hi.' And I said 'hi.' And that's how it started."

For Kim, the attraction was immediate. "It was love at first sight," he admits with a hardy laugh. "I just knew."

Their courtship blossomed slowly, nurtured by morning greetings and shared moments. "He would come down every morning, say good morning to me, give me a kiss," Barbara reminisces, "It was like that."

Their love deepened, culminating in a heartfelt proposal and a wedding celebrated within the community they now called home. "October 9th of last year, we got married right here," Barbara proudly states, pointing to framed photographs adorning their walls.

Kim, now the resident council president, reflects on their journey with gratitude. "I was alone for 19 years," he shares. "Finding Barbara was like finding a missing piece."

Yet, their story is not just about love regained—it's also about the importance of advocacy and support in their lives. The Ombudsman program, represented by Judy, holds a special place in their hearts.

"Judy is the best person," Barbara affirms warmly. "She listens, she works hard, she does what she has to do."

Kim echoes her sentiments, highlighting Judy's role in ensuring residents' needs are met. "She helps us find missing items, checks on us," he explains. "Having someone like Judy makes a big difference."

Their appreciation for Judy extends beyond personal assistance; it's about the broader impact on the community. "Sometimes, things go missing that mean a lot to people," Barbara reflects. "Judy understands that."

For Barbara and Kim, their journey through life's challenges has been softened by love and strengthened by advocacy. As they continue to navigate their days together, their story serves as a reminder of resilience, the importance of companionship, and the invaluable role of programs like the Long Term Care Ombudsman program in fostering a supportive environment.  In a world where every voice deserves to be heard and every person valued, Barbara and Kim's journey stands as a testament to the enduring power of love and the importance of compassionate care.

The New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, administered by Catholic Charities Tri-County Services agency, stands as a staunch protector of the rights and well-being of individuals residing in nursing homes, adult care facilities, and family type homes across New York State.

Dedicated volunteers and certified staff Ombudsmen are trained to visit these facilities, listening to residents' concerns and complaints, and advocating tirelessly for enhanced care and quality of life. Their role extends beyond mere oversight; they collaborate closely with facility staff to address issues and ensure residents' voices are heard and respected.
