Catholic Charities Receives Record-Breaking Assistance
ALBANY, NY – Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany today announced an unprecedented investment from the National Grid Foundation, which has awarded two grants totaling a record $550,000 to support the organization’s Emergency Assistance services. This milestone underscores the growing need for financial assistance in the face of rising living costs and increased demand for basic necessities like fuel, electricity, and housing.
For over seventeen years, the National Grid Foundation has been a steadfast partner of Catholic Charities, providing crucial funding to help families struggling to keep their homes warm and their utilities running.
“This gift helps close out the Foundation’s 25 Anniversary and ring in the new year highlighting our core principle: Giving people the tools they need to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of individuals, families and building stronger communities,” said Eileen Cohen, Board Chair, National Grid Foundation. “We also know that small amounts of emergency assistance in a time of financial crisis can prevent families from losing their homes, going without heat, experiencing food insecurity or going without other essential needs.”
The demand for emergency energy assistance has surged dramatically in recent years. In 2023, Catholic Charities served 621 households. By 2024, that number had grown to 824—a nearly 33% increase in just one year and almost double the number of households served since 2021.
The rising cost of fuel and electricity has made the situation even more urgent. In 2021, the average assistance grant per household was $463. By 2024, that figure had risen to $548, largely due to the increasing cost of fuel and electricity. For example, the cost of a minimum fuel delivery in 2021 ranged from $300 to $400, while in 2024, the cost has soared to an average of $600.
"As the cost of living continues to soar", our neighbors—whether in rural towns or suburban communities—are struggling just to keep the heat on and the lights running. In 2024, 60% of the households we served were in rural areas, where isolation and limited resources make the challenges even greater, while 40% were in suburban areas, proving that financial hardship knows no boundaries,” said Sister Betsy Van Deusen, CSJ, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany. “This $550,000 in funding from the National Grid Foundation is more than just assistance—it is a lifeline for many. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing partnership and extraordinary generosity. Catholic Charities is committed to being there whenever and wherever our neighbors need us."
Each year, thanks to National Grid Foundation’s continued support, Catholic Charities expands its reach, helping more individuals and families navigate financial hardships. As the need for assistance continues to grow, the organization remains committed to providing essential services to the most vulnerable members of the community.
