A Message from Sister Betsy
I wouldn’t be asking if we didn’t really need you!
Today, I am reaching out to you with an urgent appeal on behalf of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany. As an organization dedicated to serving those in need within our community, we are currently facing unprecedented challenges that require immediate attention and support.
In early 2024, Catholic Charities has witnessed a staggering 68% increase, in our neighbors needing food aid compared to early 2023. This overwhelming need includes Catholic Charities’ food pantries and soup kitchens. Families and individuals are struggling to put food on the table, facing financial hardships exacerbated by economic uncertainties and rising costs of living.
Released just this month, a child poverty report by the NYS Comptroller highlights the severity of food insecurity:
- Nearly one in five New York children live in poverty.
- New York State’s child poverty rate is one of the worst in the nation.
- The gap in child poverty rates between New York and the U.S. has been widening since 2019.
In addition to the increased need for food assistance, we have seen a surge in requests for emergency assistance from helping with rent and car repairs to assisting with utility payments, we are witnessing firsthand the profound impact of financial instability on individuals and families in our community.
During these challenging times, your support is vital in providing our neighbors with compassion, hope, and opportunity. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and unwavering commitment to our mission. Thank you! Because of you, It’s the Good We Do.
