Retired and Senior Volunteer Program honors 250 volunteers

ILION — The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Herkimer County honored 250 volunteers who donated 21,000 hours to assist thousands of individuals in Herkimer County.

The annual volunteer recognition luncheon took place Thursday at Francesca’s in Ilion.

RSVP volunteers provide many services, including transporting seniors to medical appointments, counseling Medicare beneficiaries on complicated health insurance issues, serving meals at nine emergency food pantries, tutoring at-risk students through the America Reads after-school program and providing assistance at the 25 RSVP volunteer stations throughout the county. RSVP volunteers target the communities’ most critical needs and are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the county’s most vulnerable populations.

Janet Vedder received the Hours for Others award, Walter Raffle received the Miles for Others award and Volney “Spike” Seeley received the Hearts for Others award.

Additionally, in recognition of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany celebrating their centennial year, Maureen Petrie and Vince Colonno presented centennial medallions to Terry Leonard and Sister Rachel Ricciardelli for their contributions to Catholic Charities of Herkimer County.
